Little Stint

Description:

Tiny, compact stint with short bill; upperparts have dark brown and pale rufous feathers. In flight, shows grey sides to tail. Adult breeding has pale mantle, rufous wash to face, neck sides and breast, and rufous fringes to upperpart feathers. Non-breeding has untidy, mottled/streaked appearance, with grey breast sides.


Distribution:

Common passage migrant through the western Gilgit-Baltistan, rare in Astore and Baltistan. Usually found near wetlands; including marshes, lakes, river banks, boggy areas and grasslands. From lowlands up to 3000m during passage migration.


Behavior:

Feeds by rapid pecking actions, sometimes probes; detects prey by sight. Gregarious, in small to large flocks. Chiefly feeds on invertebrates; primarily larval and adult beetles; also ants, water-bugs, annelids, small molluscs, crustaceans, freshwater mites and plant material.
